Best way to convert a recessed light into a pendant?
I have three recessed lights (put in by the builder, 5 years ago), that I would like to convert to pendant lights.
I know of three options:
- Portfolio conversion kit with light (, but limited shade selection)
- Well Hung LIght: 0 or so on line, large selection of shades
- The Can Converter (converter only): incl. shipping on-line (I know I’ve seen in Lowe’s, may be less there), PLUS the cost of the pendant
A couple of questions:
- any experience with any of these?
- would it make sense to get the cheaper Portfolio kit and then replace the shade (are the shades interchangeable with shades I might see at a hardware store)?
I’m not prepared to spend 0+ per light so the well hung light is likely out. Also, I’ve replaced many light fixtures, but I’m no Bob Vila.
Thanks

Your question is so specific that I think you have to go to the manufacturer (Portfolio) to get answers on replacement shades. I would say, if someone makes something specific to convert from a recessed can to a pendant, then go for it. Otherwise, you’ll have to do some ceiling work to patch the holes. It’s strange that you would want to replace cans with pendants because typically most people want to see the light in a space without seeing the source of the light. Usually pendants are only used when recessing the fixture is impractical or not possible.
