Can I cut the cord of a plug in pendant light and hook it up to the electrical box in my ceiling?
I found a pendant light that I’d like to buy, but it is a plug-in light that I would hang from my ceiling with hooks. I’d rather not do this since I don’t want to put any unnecessary holes in my ceiling. So is it possible to cut the plug off and attach these wires to the wires in the electrical box that is already installed?
thanks.

Yes you can. The side of the cord that has ribs on it will get attached to the white wire and the other to the black wire coming from the ceiling. Get the correct ceiling fixture with a loop on the end to hang the light from since the wires won’t hold the weight of the light.

Sure you can do that. Why not?
Yes there are ribs on one side of the ZIP cord of the fixture However if you can not GROUND the fixture, you have just done something illegal. SO WHAT?
Well, you do this and nothing happens, WONDERFUL!
BUT, if something DOES happen, who’s responsible?
Also. if the fixture is not UL approved for the purpose (?)
There is a difference between doing it and doing it right.
Are you planning to hang it from the chain or the wire? If you’re planning on hanging it from the wire, the "mounting means " must also be approved for the purpose.
Good Luck and may God bless.
You would need a hanger and ‘boss’ for the ceiling box.
The pieces are available at your friendly local hardware store.
Be careful that the cord doesn’t chafe as it enters the filling.
The side of the cord with the rib is connected to the white neutral
in your ceiling box.
Interesting the various answers you get from the "experts" here. Go to one of the big box stores, (Lowe’s or Home Depot, or an electrical supply ), and tell them what you want to do and they will advise you as to what you need and how to do the connecting and hanging. If the light is approved for hanging from a chain attached to a hook then it is approved for hanging from a chain attached to your electrical box.
