Can I wire a dimmer switch to an outlet on the ceiling that rope lights will be plugged in to?
I am putting the rope lights behind crown molding. I am installing an outlet behind the crown that the lights will be plugged in to. If I wire a dimmer switch to the outlet will it dim the rope lights? Will dimming the rope lights work?

dimmer switches will work on all lights except florescent lighting. They work on ceiling fans, about anything electrical except florescent which has to have the maximum voltage to start and maintain their usage.
Yes. You can use the dimmer for that purpose. It’s actually pretty creative, and it should be quite safe. Just leave some access to the rope lights for future maint. Great idea, though!
Yes!
Dimmers will not work properly with LED lights either. If the rope light uses incandescent type bulbs your idea will work well.
Probably not a good idea.
Yes, you can as long as they are not LED type bulbs, to also comment on soneone elses post you CAN NOT use a dimmer on a ceiling fan, you have to use a speed control for the fan, but you can use a dimmer on the Light part of the fan IF a 3 wire was pulled to the fan
NO! It is against the National electrical code to have a dimmer control a ‘normal’ receptacle. See 404.14(E). There are special dimmer/receptacles that are allowed that do not use a normal plug. You cannot use a ’standard’ dimmer with your simple receptacle.
