Can string lights be made into a ceiling light fixture?
As in hard wired so that it can be turned on and off via light switch? If not what would be a better alternative to this type of idea, I realize small bulbs could have the same effect I am looking for but what would then be the best way to wire them to connect to the single sorce (I am going for a hanging loose chandelier look)?

yes
either connect the wire to a plug and use the plug switch to switch the lights on or off or install a switch in between the plug and lights whatever is easier. make sure the fuse is 5amp
the other alternative is to wire the flex into a fused spur off the ring mains circuit rather than the light circuit. again 5amp fuse.
could also be wired straight into your lighting circuit if you usethe correct wire.
the best answer really is to get a qualified sparky in if you,ve any doubts.you can swim in water but electricity does you harm and you cant see it coming
if the lights are powered by transformer you can take feed off lighting curcuit the same if you use low voltage spot lights (downlighters) but beware if you are not a electrician please
get qualified installation.or if you cause fire your insurance will not pay out
