lighting pendant Archives

I have a pendant light on the landing. When fitted with a low energy light bulb it flashes once every 10 seconds when the lightswitch is off and therefore should have no current passing through it. If I change it for a standard filament bulb this does not happen. I have not encountered this problem in any other light fitting in the house. Any ideas?

sexy, luxurious lighting for our master bedroom??

Wondering what would look right in a galley kitchen. I know recessed will work, but thought it could be nice to do a combination of recessed lighting and pendants. Is that a bad thing for a galley kitchen with standard heigh ceilings? I don’t want to do track lighting.

I get a bonus every year from work. Today I find out if we owe anything on our taxes, and if we don’t, I’d like to spend the bonus on something for the house.

Last year we got new blinds, but I’d like to add some warmth to the rooms with some soft window treatments. However my husband and I agreed that if the bonus should go toward "home improvement", so we also talked about replacing the lighting. It’s a new construction home, and we didn’t get a choice on the lighting, so all the ceiling lights are the hideous shiny 80s brass things.

We plan to put the house on the market in a year or so, so we have tried to keep everything neutral. If I got drapes, I would want to add color and do something different in every room. Since color is such a personal thing, I imagine the drapes are not something that would "improve" the value of the home. We would leave the hardware (rods and brackets), but probably take the actual drapes with us when we move. Even if they don’t stay, I think the house will "show" better if we have soft treatments on the windows.

Lighting on the other hand would stay with the house and improve the value. We installed a bronze ceiling fan in the great room last year and I would like to carry that through the rest of the first floor lighting. I’d like something in stained glass in the foyer, but something more simple for the rest of the first floor (2-3 flush ceiling lights, pendant lights over the kitchen island and informal dining room and a chandelier over the formal dining room table).

I am remodeling my kitchen and I will be having a 4 foot by 6 foot kitchen island. I would like to to have 2 or 3 light across pendant lighting installed above it. What is the rule for how big (height and width) it should be? Also, how many inches above the island should the lighting be?
I also would like to know has wide the lighting should be to go over a 6 foot island that will have a bar.

I’ve seen online some stores that sells Moroccan lamps and lanterns, chandeliers but they all look cheap and the designs are not that impressing however i’m looking for a source for high-end Moroccan light fixtures and Moorish lighting like lanterns, sconces, chandeliers, hanging pendants, lamps with unique designs and handmade from quality materilas like solid brass not from thin or cheap metal that rust.
any suggestions?

I have a newer home that had two existing light sources in the kitchen. The control switch for the light above the sink is located in the kitchen and the light switch for the light located in the middle of the kitchen is on the wall entering into the kitchen. I tried replacing the light above the sink with a pendant lighting. When taking the existing light down I saw that all the wires were black not labeled so I went to the hardware store and bought a circuit tester. I found out that two wires were hot and the other wire did not set off the circuit tester. Previously one of the hot wires was connected to the wire that did not set the circuit tester off, and the other hot wire was by itself. When I hooked up the pendant light I connected all the hot wires and left the wire that caused no reaction by itself, then connected the ground wire to the screw in the mounting bracket. The pendant light turns on, but the other light will not as a matter of fact both light switches turn on and off the pendent light. Am I suppose to separate the hot wires if so how do i know which one to hook up to the pendant hot wire.

We are building a salon and I was wondering if anyone knows where to buy commercial lighting in Dallas, TX. I would like to use those nice pendants and need to buy around 30 of them. Can lights are nice too. Thanks!

all I see are countless lantern/box style lights. I want the smallish halogen lights that are designed for indoors…..but there are only a couple.

any help?

thx
will not be rained on, it’s covered. I just don’t want a big brass box with a bulb inside it….that looks like crap.

I foolishly bought a pendant lamp with only a 100 watt halogen light bulb for my dining area. Now that I’ve decided to replace it with a bigger chandalier, how many watts of light should I be looking at? I do have a Lutron dimmer, so it’ll be adjustable. Is total wattage even what I should be looking at? Is there some other measurement to consider?

Because my dining room has a sloping roof, I can really only do a single chandalier or pendant lamp. A single pendant lamp will never be bright enough — so that’s out. Most chandaliers tend to have lamp shades that focus upwards, whereas I know lighting for a dining table should mostly focus downwards — to draw people into the dining area.

What are my options? For what it’s worth, I very much want a modern, contemporary design.

I like drum pendants and modern lighting but can’t seem to find any under 0 that are the hardwire kind. I don’t like the plastic put together kind either. Does anyone know where I could find a drum, box, rectangular or good modern hardwire lighting under 0? Size preferably 20-24"D. THanks.

The metal light i have just bought has two earth wires on it. Do i bind these together and put them in a terminal block or chock box. Are there any diagrams to show me how to do it. Thanks for any help i can get.

I have 2 alfa G68Pk pendants. The diameter is 3 1/2 inches by 7 inches height. It has the MR 16 bulb inside. My peninsula is 57 inches long and at the wall end, I have an upper wall cabinet that extends out one foot from the wall. Should the 2 pendants be centered from the entire length of the penninsula or the "free space"? Where should I place them?

Also, the width of the penninsula is 36 inches. If I hang both of them on the ceiling 15 inches from the edge of the overhang where the bar stools are, they won’t get in the way of the cabinets sticking out. Would not centering the width of the penninsula look awkward?

As pendant lights (small) over a reception desk in a lobby? The lobby will be edgy decor.. but classy and contemporary.
I can pick colors and pattern. Don’t forget.. these will be small pendant lights.

I don’t want those little pendant lights b/c I don’t think they give off enough light, and I can’t afford to put in recess lights. I need to be able to switch it out myself. Suggestions?

Therefore I want to replace the fixture with something that I can reach, I dont know if I should use a pendant lighting, or another track lighting. Please help me!!

I have a space for a lighting fixture in the middle of my room, what type of lighting can i use? A pendant lighting ot chandleier?
I was thinking of this fixture http://www.target.com/gp/product/B000NVTF2K/601-1995043-4222525

is that ok?

How far up from a bartop kitchen counter do you hang pendant lights?

I replaced a ceiling fan/light, which was attached to a wall-mounted dimmer switch, with a pendant light. The dimmer has an on/off switch as well as a slide bar to control the brightness of the light. The dimmer did not control the fan before and only controlled the fan’s light. The circuit breaker was triggered during installation and had to be reset. I used one of the bulbs from the fan for the new pendant light. While the new light turns on/off with the switch, it does not dim. The light stays at its brightest regardless of where the slide bar is moved. Did the dimmer switch get damaged? Should I replace it? If not, why does the dimmer not work on my new pendant light when it worked 30 minutes before with the fan light and same bulb?

The hanging pendant, is for interior lighting, but I just don’t know if it’s okay to put in a bedroom with high ceilings. Wanted something different, and didn’t know if that would be too much.

I have a vaulted ceiling in my kitchen and it is hard to reach the bulbs to change, so I want to put pendant light on the existing track so I can reach a little easier, and give it a new look

I picked up a cute kid’s shade at IKEA, but did not buy the pendant light that they had (for ) since it had an ordinary plug for a wall outlet. I want something that mounts to the ceiling to replace an existing fixture. Oddly, I can’t seem to find anyone who sales a plain, ordinary, white pendant light. Lots of designer stuff is available, with fancy gold chains and decorative shades, for and up. I just want a plain round disk to mount to the ceiling, a clean white cord hanging down, and a fixture on the end that will take my shade and a 100 watt bulb. Does anyone know of any store, online or retail, who carries such an obvious product?

I have three recessed lights (put in by the builder, 5 years ago), that I would like to convert to pendant lights.

I know of three options:
- Portfolio conversion kit with light (, but limited shade selection)
- Well Hung LIght: 0 or so on line, large selection of shades
- The Can Converter (converter only): incl. shipping on-line (I know I’ve seen in Lowe’s, may be less there), PLUS the cost of the pendant

A couple of questions:
- any experience with any of these?
- would it make sense to get the cheaper Portfolio kit and then replace the shade (are the shades interchangeable with shades I might see at a hardware store)?

I’m not prepared to spend 0+ per light so the well hung light is likely out. Also, I’ve replaced many light fixtures, but I’m no Bob Vila.

Thanks

I am changing my light fittings and currently the ones i have all hold multiple ses bulbs.I have energy saving bulbs in all of them.Is it possible to get pendant fittings that hold just 1 ses bulb as these are expensive and i have loads of em.

I have 27" room (from the point on the ceiling where I will hang the light to the top of the doorway.) Pendant light sizes range from 10" up to over 20". I dont want it to look too small or too big for the doorway. Most of the ones I like are around 15". Will that look too big?
