How do I wire 2 lights, 1 switch, and a ceiling fan to work when the light switch is off? Help me please!?
I have large room, 2 separate lights are in it. Their both controlled by one light switch. I want to take 1 light out and replace it with a ceiling fan with a light kit in it also. If I hook the black to black, and the white to white, will I be able to use the fan when the lights are off ? How do you wire to have both lights go off with the switch, but still have electric to use fan at night? Please help me!

i always would use 12-3 cable when i install ceiling fans, that way the fan and light can be controlled independently. if you don’t want to spend the money or time on rewiring the fan, just unscrew the bulbs for the other lights at night OR install remote control lighting adapters on them. just pull the cord on your fans light when that is not in use.(usually they have 2 pull chains)
~~something like this for the other lights(motion)

You won’t be able to do that. The switch that currently controls both lights disconnects the power to the circuit. This means that you cannot separate the two from each other. You will need to have an electrician rewire the room in order to do what you are wanting.
I AM SORRY TO SAY THAT THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN DO THAT IS YOU HAVE TO RUN ANOTHER LINE FROM THE SWITCH TO EACH LIGHT AND FAN. WHEN YOU SWITCH IT TO OFF YOU HAVE NO POWER TO THE LIGHTS OT TO THE NEW FAN.YOU COULD RUN A 14-3 W/GND TO THE LIGHT AND FAN. KEEP THE WHITES HOOKED UP AND PIGTAIL THE RED WITH THE HOT BLACK AND A BLACK WIRE FROM THE FEED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SWITCH AND THE OTHER TO THE TOP. tHIS WAY YOU WILL HAVE POWER TO THE FAN AND YOU CAN SWITCH OFF THE LIGHTS. iF THE FAN HAS A REMOTE CONTROL YOU CAN USE THAT TO OPERATE THE FAN.YOU DONT HAVE TO CHANGE THE WIRES TO THE OTHER LIGHT. JUST GO BLACK TO BLACK AND WHITE TO WHITE.THIS SHOULD DO THE TRICK FOR YOU. EDIT YOUR QUESTION IF YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND.
bev this is one of those questions that if you have to ask……
this one really can kill you.
find someone who knows what they are doing to help
their some easy work around’s you just have to know what to do
but ever circumstance is different.
basicly i recommend you leave the lights alone and just put the fan in the middle of the room with code wiring.

If the wires from the Breaker Panel are coming to the light fixture box and then switching wires go from there to the switch and back you are fine. One of the switch wires would connect to the black wires going to the light fixtures and the other switch wire would connect to the Hot (black) wire coming from the breaker along with the black wire coming from the fan which has a string switch of it’s own. The white (Neutral) wires from the lights and fan would all connect to the white going to the Panel. (more then likely a white is being used as one of the switch wires which is normal and it should be re-identified on each end with black tape) The Ground (bare copper or green) should be continuous throughout the system. The Ground from the Panel should be connected to each light fixture, the fan,the switch, and any metal box.
You can’t, you will have to install another switch just for the fan. Most likely you are going to have to remove the switch box and replace it with a double box with two switches. Then install a pigtail on the line side of the switch,(black wire always hot), and route it to the new switch. Run a new pair of wires to the fan, one black one white, In the switch box hook all the whites together. Hook the black from the fan to the other side of the new switch. In the ceiling fan hook the new wires to the fan and old wires to light and you are good to go. Both lights will turn off/on with one switch and the fan with the other.
