I have no existing light fixtures in the spots I want the pendant lights to hang, is this a big job? For a professional?

if there no light there it can get into a big job for a home owner to do i would get a professional to do it for you make sure you hire a electrician that is licensed and insured

I believe you are referring to Swag Lamp.
These are light fixtures that plug into a wall receptacle and have a hook you screw into the ceiling to hang the fixture from.
The kit usually comes prewired with at least 2 ceiling hooks, chain, 10 to 12 feet of cord and instructions.
The main cautions:
- follow the instructions carefully
- Make sure the hooks are screwed into supporting members
properly (you do not want it to come down on someones
head.
- use the proper bulbs in the fixture – do not go above the
rated size.
