I get a bonus every year from work. Today I find out if we owe anything on our taxes, and if we don’t, I’d like to spend the bonus on something for the house.

Last year we got new blinds, but I’d like to add some warmth to the rooms with some soft window treatments. However my husband and I agreed that if the bonus should go toward "home improvement", so we also talked about replacing the lighting. It’s a new construction home, and we didn’t get a choice on the lighting, so all the ceiling lights are the hideous shiny 80s brass things.

We plan to put the house on the market in a year or so, so we have tried to keep everything neutral. If I got drapes, I would want to add color and do something different in every room. Since color is such a personal thing, I imagine the drapes are not something that would "improve" the value of the home. We would leave the hardware (rods and brackets), but probably take the actual drapes with us when we move. Even if they don’t stay, I think the house will "show" better if we have soft treatments on the windows.

Lighting on the other hand would stay with the house and improve the value. We installed a bronze ceiling fan in the great room last year and I would like to carry that through the rest of the first floor lighting. I’d like something in stained glass in the foyer, but something more simple for the rest of the first floor (2-3 flush ceiling lights, pendant lights over the kitchen island and informal dining room and a chandelier over the formal dining room table).

See Figure B. Insted of a standard socket I want to connect a series of recessed ceiling lights (6)

I had an electrician install a set of ceiling lights on the same circuit. The bulbs blow, one at a time when I turned on the lights over a 2 month period, before I call in another electrician what could the problem be?

At first I was having trouble with my air conditioner blowing a fuse. (Yes, the previous owners left half of the house on a fuse box and put the half on a circuit box). I ran down to the basement and put in a new one and it would instantly blow agin. So… I unplugged the air conditioner cleaned the bugger out and then tried putting in a new fuse. Then I went back up stairs and plug the darn thing in and . . . poof! Sparks flew every where around the outlet. Now here’s the thing, I have been using that darn air conditioner all summer long with no problems what so ever. About 4 boxes of fuses (keep in mind there are 4 fuses per box) later. I now am unable to turn my ceiling lights on in half of my house. I would call an electrician but my stubborn husband won’t let me. He says it’s too expensive. Anyone have any idea what the problem is and how much it might cost me if I do call an electrician.

I have can ceiling lights with flood lights. Does anyone make compact flourescent flood lights for can lighting.

have 60watt ceiling lights in fan, can I use them energy saving lights instead? there are the 13 watt lights

I purchased a big package of CFLs hoping to switch out the bulbs all over the house. Well, I have found one socket to date where the CFL will work. Many of my ceiling lights are on dimmers, so I suspect this is the cause for these lights; however, in lamps and other ceiling fixtures (no dimmer), the bulbs do not work. Any ideas??? Thanks.

Our rented bungalow is lighted with 220 volts electricity. After 6 months my ceiling lights dimmed into 110 volts but all my outlets are still 220 volts. I checked the circuit breaker for ceiling lights and they are ok. Did the previous occupants tampered the power supply?

My kitchen’s ceiling lights are warm fluorescent tubes. Is it okay to have under cabinet lights of color temperature different from that of fluorescent, like halogen lights? Or, are there any non-fluorescent under cabinet lights that have the same color temperature of warm fluorescent kitchen light?

Hello everyone. I had a question about ceiling lights. My living room definitely needs more light and I don’t really want to have lamps or halogen lamps everywhere. I’d rather have a clean look with ceiling lights. However, I’ve never done this before. Someone told me that I would need to make sure that the house was prewired for that. Does anyone have experience with this? Where would I have to go to get this kind of work done? The house was built in 2001. Thank you
