Pendant lights are really great I think they are better then over head any way. On-line they have some really great ones. Lowe's.com and Ikea has some cool ones too for a really great price. circalighting.com is a site all the chic designers use it NY. Not a lot of people out of the industry know about it but they are not cheep! Last year I did a teens room on a budget and the lighting I wanted were pendents but we were not finding any rich looking ones that were in our price range so I made them myself and they were great looking. This is what I did.... I went to walmart and bought six (I made six of them) Clear glass vases. You just need to keep in mind the shape when shopping for these They will be upside down and the bulb needs to be an inch (at least) away from all sides. Then I bought these pendent light kits at Home depot. They were really cheep. The ones I bought used candelabra bulbs but you can also get full size bulb ones on-line at Ikea. They just come with a socket attached to a cord with a plug on the end and a switch on the cord. I had some of them wired to the switch through the celing and for those I used a decorative celing plate from Home Depot to cover the hole in the celing. They have a few different ones in the lighting section. An electrician can do this cheep cost me 75$ for four of them. Then I bought a ceramic drill bit large enough to make a hole for the cord to pass through. I put masking tape on the bottom of the vase in an x and slowly drilled a hole. I broke the first one because I was pushing to hard but the vases were like 2$ so it was ok just do this step first just incase and dont push very hard at all. Then I bought all these glass paints at Micheals. I driped all of the colors in the room toward the bottom of the vase and then turned it over on a towel and let them run and dry. I turned them back and forth a little while the paint was running to get this swirl effect. Once they were ready I snipped the wire about 4 in. away from the socket and stripped the wire about a 1/2 in. on both sides. Then I put the socket into the vase and reatatched the wire on the outside. You just twist the wires back together like a twist tie on bread and then cover the bare wires WELL with elecrical tape. Just hang on a hook or use the plate for a celing mount. I hung 2 on a hook from the celing and used a long piece of satin to cover the ugly cord. I just took the length of the cord x 2 and about 5 in wide. Then I hemed the sides for a nice finish and glued on a piece of velcrow to both sides I had to cut it much thinner than it came. Then you just put that over the cord and scrunch it. It looks so chic!! Ive done it to all my cords at home now!! Good luck!!

Try low voltage or florescent lights placed on the carpet behind items like plants or wardrobes. Be careful not to place them directly on flammable surfaces

Depending on your price ranges. I'd recommend going to Home Depot or Loewe's.
Ikea also is pretty cheap and has a great selection, you can see their catalog online at www.ikea.com.
If you want something online, I'd recommend:
Pottery Barn - www.potterybarn.com
Crate & Barrel - www.crateandbarrel.com
Antrhopologie - www.anthropologie.com
Urban Outfitter - www.urbanoutfitters.com
Good luck!
